The year is not over yet but the numbers are black: 43 women died from domestic violence. Put another way: 43 women were murdered by partners, husbands, boyfriends, ex-husbands, finally, a bunch of mad who do not deserve any sympathy.
The data revealed by UMAR give an average of a woman murdered almost every week in Portugal! If we add to this number that at least 64 other women were targets of attempted murder, then we will have a closer idea of the climate of terror in which many Portuguese women live.
Of the 43 fatalities, six are Azores, a new maximum regional and that has led to the Azores UMAR alert to the need to be aware of the seriousness of the problem.
A problem that goes deeper in our society, because they are not "just" the older generation that fit the definition of domestic violence. Among the couples of lovers, are young adults and even teenagers, are known cases of attitude of physical and psychological violence: punching, kicking, threats, blackmail and even "tareias" that young "male Latinos" to apply girlfriends. True heroes of cowardice.
It is true that education begins in schools, are no less true that it is better to educate parents that their children have. But it is for all of us use the power of complaint. And this is another problem within the problem, which is the universe of domestic violence. How many of us prefer not to look the part, ignoring the screams that you hear in the box next to rather than make a simple phone call to the police? The sad reality is that many of the deaths recorded so far probably could have been avoided if someone in time warned the authorities. For every woman who died, who is a victim of abuse, we are all co-responsible.
In this complex equation fits yet another variable: the shame. The majority of women, younger to older, seems to have a sense of shyness, timidity in towards society and not realize that this is the worst of attitudes. This is the old and spends phrase "until he is good person. Only when it hits me jealous!
